Peak District Towns and Villages

Visiting Peak Distict Towns and Villages …

The Main Peak District towns are Ashbourne, Bakewell, Baslow, Calver,  Castleton, Edale, Hathersage, Hope, Matlock and Wirksworth. These are the main centres of commerce and give access to various Peak District attractions.

The most convenient way to get around and to see these towns is by car but there are public transport links. Buses link most of the towns and villages but the services are a bit thin on the ground and are shared between various small local operators like Hulleys and the big national bus and coach companies. The railway links are much poorer after the closure of various lines over the years and only really work if you use a bike, bus or taxi to get to your destination. One really useful rail link is the line that passes through the Hope Valley, trains stop at the principle places, most notably the village of Edale which is really handy if you are intending to walk thr Pennine Wal or watch the Edale annual Barrel race.

These are by no means the only Peak District towns, you have places like Ashford in the Water, Darley Dale, Rowsley and Youlgrave – all have their own points of interest.

As well as these Peak District towns, there are many villages too, some of them have shops and accommodation but not in the same concentration as the main towns. Some of the more important and interesting Peak District Villages are Taddington, Tideswell, Eyam, Bamford, Beeley, Stanton in Peak, Beeley and Tissington.

There are various good reasons for visiting these Peak DIstrict towns and places. There are many good restaurants, some located out of the way in the smallest villages, pubs doing good hearty pub grub and real ales and shops selling local produce. Some of the towns have impressive or interesting churches or other architecture. The local vernacular depends on the area of the Peak District – in the white Peak, the buildings are built from the local grey limestone whilst in the Dark Peak, the warmer colour of the gritstone is dominant.
